Can I resign during a 12-month probation period and still serve my notice?

I'm about to start a Software Engineer position at a company with a 12-month probation period, but I'm also interviewing elsewhere. If I receive a stronger offer within the next four or five months, I may decide to leave. How is resignation normally handled during probation? Would I usually be released immediately, or would I still need to serve the two-month notice period? Can I request to work through the full notice period rather than leave early, and what's the most professional way to discuss the situation with my manager and HR? I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have dealt with similar arrangements or from HR professionals.

The contract is what matters most here. A probation period doesn't automatically cancel the notice requirement, so check the clauses covering resignation, notice, and early release. Some companies have a shorter notice period during probation, while others apply the same two-month period. If the contract is unclear, ask HR for clarification before making any assumptions. You can also request to work the notice period, but the company may agree to release you earlier if business needs allow it. If you do receive another offer, tell your manager and HR promptly, keep the conversation professional, and offer to document your work and support a smooth handover.

That makes sense. I'll review the employment terms carefully and ask HR about the exact process rather than relying on general expectations.
