Can I run Steam games on an old Linux laptop without Vulkan support?

I switched from Windows to Linux Mint last November and initially used Cinnamon, but my old laptop performed much better after moving to XFCE. The main problem is Steam gaming: games may run for a few minutes, show errors, or launch without displaying a window. I've tried different Proton versions and various launch options without success. I recently learned that my GPU does not support Vulkan and appears to rely on OpenGL instead. I'm new to Linux and would like to know whether Steam gaming is still practical on this hardware, and what information or troubleshooting steps would help diagnose the problem.

The exact hardware matters here, especially the CPU, GPU, amount of RAM, Linux Mint version, and the error messages Steam shows. If the GPU lacks Vulkan, Proton can sometimes use WineD3D instead of Vulkan. In Steamโs game launch options, try `PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%`, although performance and compatibility may be limited.

There is a WineD3D/OpenGL fallback for some Windows games, but it isnโt a universal solution. Games that require newer DirectX features, Vulkan, or more capable graphics hardware may simply not work, while older or less demanding titles have a better chance. Checking each gameโs requirements and testing native Linux versions may be more productive than repeatedly changing Proton versions.

Trying another distribution probably wonโt overcome the limitations of an old GPU. A different distro could provide newer drivers or a more convenient gaming setup, but it cannot add Vulkan support or make unsupported hardware substantially faster. Mint with XFCE is reasonable; the key questions are which GPU and driver are installed and whether the particular games are compatible with WineD3D.

MellowCedar42: Iโve already tried that launch option along with several other commonly suggested fixes, but it didnโt change anything. Iโll gather the full hardware details and error messages so the issue can be narrowed down.
