I'm putting together a mostly white PC, but white RAM costs considerably more than the black kits I'm considering. Is there a safe way to change the RAM's appearance, such as painting the heat spreaders, without damaging the modules or affecting cooling and performance?

You can paint the heat spreaders, but remove the modules first and carefully mask the connector pins. Use several very thin coats rather than one heavy coat, and let everything cure fully before reinstalling it. Avoid getting paint near the contacts, PCB, chips, or any ventilation areas. Keep in mind that modifying the sticks could also affect the warranty.
If you really want the white look, removable vinyl or a purpose-made cover may be less permanent than spray paint. Just make sure it doesn’t block airflow around the heat spreaders or press against anything on the module.
Honestly, black components can look intentional in a white build. A few dark accents—especially the RAM, GPU, or fans—often give the system some contrast, and it’s safer than adding paint inside the case.
