I've just started my fourth year, and companies have already begun visiting my college for placements. I wasn't serious about coding or job preparation earlier, so I'm starting from a weak position and feeling overwhelmed.
My DSA knowledge is very basic. I've only completed the beginning of an arrays-focused study plan and solved around five to seven coding problems. I also don't have any substantial self-built projects; most of what I've made involved heavy AI assistance, and I can't confidently explain the implementation. My computer science fundamentals are average as well.
I know I should have started earlier, but I want to use the remaining time effectively. Is it realistically possible to get placed in the next few months? What should I prioritize between DSA, projects, CS fundamentals, aptitude, and interview practice? Should I continue with a broad DSA sheet or focus on common company-specific patterns? I'd also appreciate advice on building one or two projects that I can genuinely understand and discuss in interviews, along with a practical three-to-six-month roadmap.

It’s possible, but you need to be very selective with your goals. Don’t try to master every topic or build several impressive-looking projects. Focus first on getting comfortable with common DSA patterns, then cover core subjects such as OOP, databases, operating systems, networking, and SQL. At the same time, build one small project from the ground up so you understand every major decision and can explain the trade-offs.
Also prepare for aptitude and the actual hiring process used by companies visiting your campus. A realistic daily plan might include coding practice, fundamentals, project work, and mock interviews. Consistency and being able to clearly explain what you know will matter more than claiming to have completed a huge checklist.
Don’t assume a new graduate will spend all day writing brand-new systems. Many entry-level roles involve reading an existing codebase, debugging issues, making small changes, and adding features. Practice taking a simple application, understanding how it works, finding a bug, and improving it. That gives you something concrete to discuss in interviews.
AI tools can help you learn and speed up development, but don’t present generated code that you can’t explain. Use them to ask questions, compare approaches, write tests, and refactor code after you understand the basics.
A late start is a disadvantage, not an automatic rejection. For the next three to six months, I’d prioritize campus opportunities and use a narrow plan: common arrays, strings, hashing, two pointers, stacks, queues, binary search, linked lists, trees, and basic graphs. Solve fewer problems more deeply, revisiting them until you can identify the pattern without help.
Build one modest but complete project with authentication or data storage, error handling, tests, and a clear README. Then prepare concise explanations of the architecture, problems you faced, and improvements you would make. Apply broadly and treat every assessment as practice rather than waiting until you feel fully ready.
