Can I Still Get an Entry-Level Programming Job If I Feel Rusty?

I'm a computer science graduate with no professional company experience. I've worked on personal projects, including a portfolio built with Laravel, a chat app using Firestore to manage keys, and several WordPress sites. I know some HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and languages such as C, but I feel rusty, forget things easily, and worry that I'm not competent enough to get hired. Is it realistic to apply for an entry-level role and build my skills as I learn on the job?

Feeling unprepared is extremely common among new graduates. Most companies expect junior developers to spend months learning their codebase, tools, and processes before becoming fully productive. Focus on rebuilding your fundamentals, practicing coding problems, improving your portfolio, and applying consistently. Interviewing is a skill too, so expect rejection while you improve.

The entry-level market is competitive, so youโ€™ll need to show what makes you a worthwhile hire. Your projects can help if you present them clearly: explain what you built, the problems you solved, the tools you used, and what you learned. Employers donโ€™t expect a new graduate to know every framework, but they do look for curiosity, reliability, communication, and the ability to keep learning.

Confidence helps, but it should come from preparation rather than pretending to know everything. Set a regular study schedule, rebuild a small project without following a tutorial, review the fundamentals youโ€™ve forgotten, and practice explaining your decisions. A hiring manager is usually asking whether youโ€™re coachable and worth investing in, not whether you already work like a senior developer.

Your experience sounds more useful than you may be giving it credit for. A Laravel portfolio, a chat application, WordPress work, and familiarity with front-end technologies give you material to discuss. Choose one direction, such as junior web development, and deepen those skills instead of trying to master every language at once.

MellowOrbit42: Iโ€™ve made a portfolio with Laravel and used Firestore as an intermediary for keys in a chat application. Iโ€™ve also built some WordPress sites and know basic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and C, although Iโ€™m rusty with several of them.
