I have a Dell OptiPlex 7040 with an Intel Core i7-6700, 32GB of RAM, Linux, and the integrated Intel HD Graphics 530. Everything is still stock, including the roughly 240W power supply. I'm considering using it for some gaming and software development, and I'm wondering whether I could simply add a dedicated GPU and possibly a support bracket. Some GPUs I've looked at have around a 275W TDP, so I'm also considering replacing the PSU. Is this practical, or would the OptiPlex's power supply, connectors, and case make a larger upgrade difficult?

A dedicated GPU upgrade may be possible, but a high-power card is not a straightforward drop-in upgrade. The stock 240W PSU is too limited for cards in the 200W-plus range, and Dell often uses proprietary motherboard power connectors and nonstandard PSU dimensions. That means replacing the PSU can require an adapter, and even then you still need to make sure the new supply physically fits and provides the necessary GPU power connectors. The case size also matters: a small-form-factor model may only accept low-profile, low-power cards, while a larger tower version has more options. For a powerful GPU, reusing the CPU, RAM, and storage in a new standard PC case may be easier and safer than heavily modifying the OptiPlex.
That makes sense. I may just reuse the CPU, RAM, and SSDs in a new build instead of trying to force a high-power graphics card into the OptiPlex.
