Can I upgrade to an RTX 5080 while keeping my 750W PSU?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 7 9850X3D, MSI RTX 5070 Gaming Trio, MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK WIFI motherboard, 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory, a Samsung 990 EVO Plus 1TB SSD, a 360mm liquid cooler, and an MSI MAG A750GL PCIe 5 II 750W power supply. I'm considering upgrading to an RTX 5080, but I'm unsure whether my current PSU has enough capacity and headroom. Would it be safe to use the 5080 with this system, or should I replace the PSU with an 850W or higher model?

I’d personally choose an 850W A-tier PSU for extra headroom, especially if you plan to add more drives, fans, or use a factory-overclocked 5080. That said, moving from a solid PCIe 5/ATX 3.x 750W unit to 850W is more about comfort and future expansion than an immediate safety requirement.

The main reason I’m asking is that I really don’t want to replace the PSU unless it’s necessary. Swapping the GPU is already enough of a project for me, so I’d prefer to keep the current unit if it’s genuinely adequate.

The exact 5080 model matters because board power can vary. A 750W PSU is likely fine for a standard model, while an 850W unit gives more margin for higher-power variants and future upgrades. With an ATX 3.x PSU, transient spikes should be handled much better than with an older design, so there is no automatic need for a 1000W supply.

Your current PSU should be capable of handling it. A decent ATX 3.x 750W supply is designed for modern GPU power behavior, and the rest of your system does not appear unusually power-hungry. There is no need to jump straight to 1000W or 1200W unless you are planning a much more demanding future upgrade.
