Can I Use a USB Capture Card to Display a Laptop’s Screen on a Monitor?

My laptop's built-in screen is completely dead, and I'm not planning to replace it. I want to connect the laptop to an external monitor so I can test a new keyboard and check whether the software it comes with is safe. The laptop has two USB ports, one mini-HDMI port, a USB-C port, and an SD card slot. I currently have a USB capture card, with USB connected to the laptop and HDMI connected to the monitor. Can this setup send the laptop's display to the monitor, or do I need a different cable or adapter?

The exact laptop model would normally matter because USB-C and mini-HDMI capabilities vary, but with a dead internal screen, the simplest option is still a direct mini-HDMI connection to the monitor. A capture card is the wrong direction for this setup.

The keyboard itself is unlikely to infect the laptop just by being plugged in. The bigger risk is any configuration software or drivers you download for it. If you’re concerned, avoid installing unknown software and scan anything you download before running it.

A typical USB capture card won’t work for this. It usually accepts an HDMI input and sends the video to a computer over USB; it doesn’t output the laptop’s video to a monitor. You’ll need a mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable or a mini-HDMI adapter connected to a regular HDMI cable. The laptop and monitor must also support displaying through that port.

Some capture cards include HDMI passthrough, but most basic USB models only have HDMI input, so check the exact model before relying on it.
