Can I Use an iMac as a Second Monitor for My ThinkPad?

I'm considering getting an iMac because I love its design and display, and it would be really helpful to use it alongside my work laptop (a ThinkPad). I'm curious if I can connect the ThinkPad to the iMac and use it as a second screen for a dual-monitor setup. If direct connection isn't possible, are there any workarounds or software solutions that could help?

Unfortunately, you can't connect a ThinkPad to an iMac directly to use it as a monitor. There were some iMac models that supported this feature, but it was mainly for connecting to other Macs, and that functionality was discontinued a while ago. So, if you're looking at recent models, this option is off the table. But if you're interested, you can learn more about the discontinued feature from Apple's support page.

Thanks for clarifying that! I'll look into the support page.

In short, no, you can't do it directly. But there are a couple of alternative solutions: 1. You can use software that requires both devices to be connected to the internet, which involves a subscription. 2. There's a hardware solution using a dongle and an ethernet cable, along with a specific app that ties both machines together. It sounds complicated, but it's really not, and you avoid the subscription model. Just be sure to check how many monitors your graphics card can support first - you might need an extra adapter if you're expanding too much.

Appreciate the detailed options! I'll research those solutions.
