I'm currently out of contract with AT&T and want to avoid signing up for another expensive phone-and-service agreement. If I trade in my iPhone 14 or buy a newer iPhone, could I use an eSIM plan from an online provider for regular US coverage instead? How does activation work, what does "unlocked" mean, and are the monthly prices and coverage comparable to major carriers?

Yes. An eSIM is simply the digital version of a physical SIM card. Many online carriers, including MVNOs such as Mint or Visible, can activate an eSIM and provide domestic phone service without requiring you to visit a store. You usually choose a plan online, download the carrier’s app, and follow the activation instructions.
The important requirements are that your iPhone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. A phone is unlocked when it isn’t restricted to AT&T or another carrier, so it can accept service from a different provider. You can usually check under Settings > General > About for the Carrier Lock field; it should say “No SIM restrictions.” The phone also generally needs to be paid off before AT&T will unlock it.
I’m out of contract, but I’ll check whether the phone is fully paid off and whether the settings show that it has no SIM restrictions.
So I can buy the plan entirely online and have it activated directly on my iPhone? I don’t need a physical SIM card?
