I have DDR4 memory left over from an older computer, but my Framework Laptop 12 (2025) uses DDR5 memory slots. Since the laptop is designed to be repairable and upgradeable, is it possible to replace the DDR5 slots with DDR4 slots or use some kind of adapter? If not, are there reliable places to find reasonably priced used DDR5 memory?

Some desktop motherboards were sold in separate DDR4 and DDR5 versions, but that doesn’t mean the memory types can be mixed or converted. For used memory, check reputable computer-parts resellers or established second-hand marketplaces, and verify the exact DDR5 SO-DIMM capacity, speed, and voltage before buying.
The memory slots are soldered to the laptop’s motherboard, so they aren’t intended to be swapped. Even if you replaced them, the processor and motherboard would still need to support DDR4. You’ll need compatible DDR5 SO-DIMMs for this system.
Unfortunately, DDR4 and DDR5 are incompatible. The difference isn’t just the position of the notch—the electrical specifications, signaling, and memory-controller support are different too. There isn’t an adapter that will make DDR4 work in a DDR5 laptop.
