Can I use my ex's iPhone 15 with a different phone plan?

I'm in a bit of a tough spot here. My ex-boyfriend added me to his account and got me an iPhone 15, but he cheats and I've decided to move on. Now I'm still stuck paying my phone bill, and he recently cut off my service. Can I use this phone with a new plan? Like, can I get a new eSIM that works with a different carrier? I'm really in need of a working phone to keep my job. Do I need access to his Verizon account to set this up, or how does that all work? Sorry if these questions sound silly, but I'm a bit lost!
