My laptop's display backlight no longer turns on, so the built-in screen is extremely dark or unusable. I was quoted about $4,500 for a screen replacement, which seems very expensive. I'll be borrowing my sister's laptop eventually, but that may take some time. Is there a practical way to keep using this laptop in the meantime without replacing the internal display right away?

Yes—connect the laptop to an external monitor or TV using HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or whichever video output your laptop supports. You may need to press the display-switch shortcut, such as Fn plus one of the function keys, to select the external screen. An inexpensive monitor or portable display should work, and this is usually much cheaper than replacing the laptop screen.
