I want to use my own webcam while physically present at the device, but I'm wondering whether there's a tool or setting—ideally without installing additional software—that would let me activate the camera only when I click it without turning on the built-in indicator light. Is this technically possible, or is the light designed to be inseparable from camera operation?

Generally, no. On most modern webcams, the indicator is wired or controlled in a way that makes it turn on whenever the camera sensor is active. That design prevents software—or someone who gains access to the computer—from silently using the camera.
A manufacturer could theoretically create custom hardware or firmware that behaves differently, but that would defeat the privacy feature and isn’t something they typically provide. Modifying or damaging the LED would also be permanent and could affect the device, so it’s not a practical solution.
The light is intentionally there as a physical privacy safeguard. If the owner could disable it through software, malware or another person using the device could do the same thing, making the indicator meaningless. Covering the light with tape may hide the glow, but it doesn’t change the fact that the camera is active.
That makes sense—the indicator is meant to protect people nearby as well as the person using the computer, so bypassing it would undermine the whole feature.
