Can Linux Make My 2012 MacBook Pro Useful Again for Steam and Everyday Tasks?

I have a 13-inch MacBook Pro from mid-2012 that can no longer receive many macOS updates or run newer applications. I'm considering installing Linux to give it a second life. Ideally, I'd like to use it for web browsing, word processing, and possibly playing some games through Steam. The system has a 2.5 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 16 GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 memory, and Intel HD Graphics 4000 graphics. Which Linux distributions or desktop environments would work well, and what should I expect regarding hardware support and gaming performance?

You have several good distribution options. Fedora, Debian, and Linux Mint are all worth considering. GNOME is a good desktop choice if you want an experience that feels polished and somewhat familiar, while KDE is also perfectly usable if you prefer more customization. Trying a few distributions from a USB drive is a good way to see what suits you.

Linux should work well on this hardware, especially with 16 GB of RAM. Fedora Workstation is a solid choice if you want something modern while still stable. You may need to configure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth after installation, but support is generally straightforward on these MacBook models.

That integrated Intel graphics chip is a lot less troublesome than the dedicated AMD graphics found in some larger MacBook Pro models. A Fedora setup with either GNOME or KDE should be reasonable, and older MacBook hardware often works well once the correct Wi-Fi drivers and firmware are installed.

It can definitely become a useful everyday computer again. Browsing, writing, media playback, and similar tasks should be fine. Steam is a different story, though: the Intel HD Graphics 4000 and dual-core processor are too limited for many modern games. Older, indie, and lightweight titles may run acceptably, but check each game's Linux requirements and expect to lower the graphics settings.
