I'm considering upgrading from an RTX 3060 Ti to either an RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5080. My system has a Gigabyte B550M DS3H motherboard with the latest BIOS, a Ryzen 7 5700X3D, 32 GB of 3600 MHz memory, an 850 W Corsair RMx Shift ATX 3.1 power supply, and a large Lian Li Lancool 216 case. I recently bought a 1440p 480 Hz OLED monitor and would like much better performance in modern, GPU-heavy games while keeping the system for at least five years. I mostly play at 1440p rather than 4K. Can I install either graphics card and expect the system to boot and work normally? I'm also concerned about possible 12VHPWR connector failures and whether installing a costly graphics card myself is reasonably safe. The power supply includes an ATX 3.1 12VHPWR cable.

The RTX 5070 Ti looks like the better choice here. At 1440p, the RTX 5080 generally doesn’t offer a huge performance advantage for the extra money, especially if the two cards are only around 20 FPS apart in the games you care about. Your 5700X3D should still be a capable pairing, and the 850 W ATX 3.1 power supply is appropriate for either card. Just confirm the card fits in the case and connect the power cable fully and straight.
For this setup, I’d also choose the 5070 Ti unless you specifically want every bit of performance and don’t mind paying the premium. The 5080 may be faster, but the difference can shrink at 1440p in CPU-limited games, and the 5700X3D could limit the benefit in some high-refresh titles. Both cards should be compatible with a modern B550 system; use the native cable supplied with your ATX 3.1 power supply and make sure it is inserted completely before powering on.
That’s what I’m leaning toward since I don’t plan to use 4K. I’m mainly wondering whether paying more for the 5080 makes sense for keeping the card five or more years, although the extra performance may be much smaller at 1440p with this CPU.
