Can overwritten WhatsApp backups or deleted chats still be recovered?

I accidentally lost my WhatsApp data after the local storage backup was overwritten by a Google Drive backup. The missing chats contain roughly four or five years of important business information. Is there any realistic way to restore the deleted messages, or are they permanently gone?

If both the local backup and the cloud backup have been overwritten, recovery is generally not possible through WhatsApp. The app can only restore data that still exists in a valid backup, and deleted or replaced backups usually can’t be reconstructed.

Is there anything else worth trying? The missing chats contain several years of business records.

There’s very little chance once the original backup has been replaced. You could check whether an older backup file still exists on the phone, an SD card, another device, or an older Google account backup, but avoid using the phone heavily because new data can overwrite recoverable files. If no older copy exists, the messages are likely gone.

I don’t have a separate backup strategy, so I’m hoping there’s still some way to find an older copy.

For future protection, keep multiple independent backups instead of relying on a single local or cloud copy. Export especially important conversations and store copies somewhere separate, because restoring a newer backup can replace the older one.
