Can RGB control software damage my PC hardware?

I recently built or bought a new PC and installed SignalRGB. I also tried OpenRGB, but it didn't seem to detect all of my components correctly. I've heard that RGB programs can damage RAM, fans, or other hardware, so I'm wondering how serious that risk is. Should I uninstall third-party software and use ASUS Armoury Crate instead, or is it better to leave the lighting at its default settings?

The software itself is usually safe, but a program that controls fan curves can cause trouble if you configure the fans to run too slowly. That’s a settings issue rather than RGB magically damaging hardware. ASUS Armoury Crate can also use a fair amount of resources, so it isn’t automatically the safer or lighter option. Use whichever single program supports your devices and keep it updated.

RGB software generally isn’t going to physically kill your RAM, fans, or other components. The biggest issue is usually running multiple RGB programs at the same time, since they can conflict while trying to control the same hardware. Pick one program and remove or disable the others. OpenRGB can sometimes show devices under a generic motherboard or controller name, so it may still be detecting them even if the labels aren’t obvious.

I’ve used OpenRGB to control RAM and fan lighting, including rapidly changing effects, without hardware problems. There can occasionally be a software bug, such as lighting getting stuck or a motherboard backlight needing to be reset, but that’s very different from permanently destroying a component. If you don’t care about customized lighting, uninstalling the extra programs and using the motherboard’s default behavior is perfectly fine.

I had a motherboard backlight stop responding with OpenRGB too, but it was a lighting-control issue rather than hardware damage. Reinstalling or switching back to the board’s own utility restored it.
