I'm building my first PC and already bought an 8GB Radeon 9060 XT. I'm pairing it with a Ryzen 9 9900X that I found at a good price, along with 32GB of DDR5-5600 memory. I still need to choose a monitor and was considering 1440p, but a friend warned that running games at that resolution could overwork and overheat the graphics card. How well should this GPU perform at 1440p, and would I be better off with a 1080p display? My heaviest game at the moment is Monster Hunter Wilds, which I currently play at medium settings on a laptop with an i5-10500 and RTX 3060.

A good 1080p monitor would be the least troublesome option, especially if you want high settings and consistent frame rates. A quality IPS panel is perfectly reasonable; Mini-LED can offer better contrast and HDR, but it usually costs more and isn’t required for a good gaming display.
The main limitation is the 8GB of VRAM, not the resolution causing the card to overheat. At 1440p, you’ll probably need medium or low settings in newer, demanding games, while older games and esports titles should run well. If you want higher settings and more longevity, the 16GB version would be a safer choice.
Check a reputable GPU performance chart and focus on the 1440p results for the specific games you play. The processor is much stronger than necessary for a gaming-focused build, so if you still had the option to change parts, putting more of the budget toward a 16GB graphics card would likely provide a better balance.
Performance depends heavily on the game. An 8GB card can still do around 80 FPS at 1440p in many titles if you adjust the settings, and an RTX 3060 Ti with 8GB has been capable of decent 1440p gaming. Just keep an eye on texture quality and VRAM usage in demanding games such as Monster Hunter Wilds.
Monster Hunter Wilds is currently the most demanding game I play, and I’m already using medium settings on my laptop. I’m mainly trying to figure out whether 1440p would be a reasonable upgrade.
