My power went out while I was gaming, so the UPS switched to battery power and I shut down the game and computer. The electricity returned, then went out again about five minutes later. This happened three times in total, and the UPS beeped and made a faint static-like noise each time, even after the computer was turned off. Is that behavior normal, and could the repeated outages have damaged the UPS or shortened the battery's life? Is it safe to keep using it?

Since you shut the computer down yourself, the UPS did not necessarily fail to keep it running. If a computer ever turns off immediately when the UPS switches to battery, check that it is connected to the battery-backed outlets rather than outlets that only provide surge protection. If it is connected correctly, an overloaded or failing battery could also be a possibility, but nothing here suggests that happened.
