Can You Play Classic PC Games on Older Hardware Running Linux?

I'm looking to build a computer using parts from the Windows 98 to XP era and am considering running a Linux distribution designed for older hardware. I'm curious if I can play classic physical PC games like Diablo 1 and 2, Half-Life 1 and 2, and Halo CE and Halo 2 by using Wine. Will these games run similarly to how they would on Windows XP?

This sounds like a fun project! I bought Halo on Steam and ran it on Linux Mint with a Xeon processor. While I finished Halo 2, the processor was almost maxed out. I'm upgrading soon, and I'm curious how the older physical copies will perform on your setup.

Thanks for the info! But just to clarify, I meant the original physical releases of Halo 1 and 2 from around the early 2000s.
