I installed an RX 9070 XT in my PC while still using an older 550W Cooler Master Bronze power supply. The computer shut down and restarted about five times when I tried launching games, so I stopped using it and ordered an 850W Gold replacement. The system works normally outside of gaming, and I have not noticed any problems. Could those sudden shutdowns have damaged the graphics card, or were they likely the power supply's protection circuitry kicking in?

Before assuming the wattage was the only problem, check that the GPU power connector is fully seated and that the card has adequate airflow. A loose connector or overheating can also cause complete shutdowns. Once the new PSU is installed, connect it with the included cables and monitor temperatures and stability.
A low wattage rating alone does not automatically mean the PSU is dangerous, but the exact model and its condition matter. A good unit should shut down safely; a faulty or poor-quality one could potentially cause other issues. Sudden power loss can also risk corrupted files, so it is sensible not to keep testing games on it.
It is a Cooler Master 550W Bronze, although I do not remember the exact model. I have left the PC unused while waiting for the 850W replacement.
I had similar crashes with a high-power graphics card, and adding case fans plus firmly reseating the power connector fixed them. The PSU may be the cause here, but those checks are worth doing too.
