Could a Sudden Bump Damage My NVMe SSD?

While I was gaming, my dog pushed the small rolling rack holding my PC backward by about 4–5 inches. The computer was powered on and under load, but it didn't hit the wall or fall over. I'm still learning the finer points of PC hardware, and I'm worried because a previous computer suddenly died from what was believed to be an SSD failure. This system is only about two months old, and I haven't noticed any obvious problems since the incident. Is an NVMe SSD at meaningful risk from that kind of sudden movement, and are there any checks I should perform?

Your rolling rack is probably the bigger long-term risk. If it can move unexpectedly, a sturdy platform would reduce the chance of the computer tipping or taking a real impact. Regardless of the bump, keep backups of anything important—SSD failures can happen without warning, and backups are the best protection.

The sudden-movement warnings mostly apply to mechanical hard drives, which have spinning platters and moving heads. NVMe drives are solid-state, so a short push across the floor shouldn’t hurt them. If Windows is running normally and the drive is detected without errors, I’d simply keep using the system and make sure important files are backed up.

The graphics card and other components mounted in slots are more likely to be affected by a serious hit than the SSD itself. A light shove might cause a loose connection, but a drive failure from this event would be very unlikely. If you start seeing crashes or drive errors, check the M.2 connection and review Windows health or event logs; otherwise, there’s no reason to assume anything broke.

An SSD has no moving parts, so ordinary jostling is very unlikely to damage the storage itself. The main concern would be something getting physically dislodged—such as an M.2 drive, its retaining screw, RAM, or a graphics card—or a cable being pulled loose. Since the PC stayed upright and didn’t take a hard impact, the risk is extremely low. You can shut it down, unplug it, and visually check that the M.2 screw and other components are secure, but there’s no special stress test you need to run.
