Could I Be Responsible If Someone Misused My Phone Hotspot?

I let a stranger on a train use my phone's hotspot because I was trying to be helpful. Now I'm worried they might have used the connection for something illegal or downloaded something questionable. Since activity through the hotspot could appear to come from my IP address or mobile account, could I be blamed, and is there anything I should do now?

Technically, activity routed through your hotspot could be associated with your mobile connection or IP address, but that doesn’t automatically mean you’re responsible for what another person did. If something serious were ever investigated, the circumstances and available records would matter. For a brief, one-time hotspot session, it’s extremely unlikely that anything will happen—especially since there’s no evidence the person actually did anything wrong.

I don’t have any proof that they did anything; I’m just stressing about the possibility.

You’re probably overthinking this. Sharing your hotspot for a short time doesn’t make you automatically liable for every action taken through it. Just change the hotspot password afterward and avoid leaving it open or sharing it with strangers if it will make you uncomfortable.

I only shared it because I was trying to be kind, but I’ll change the password now so I can stop worrying.

If authorities ever needed to trace online activity, they might initially see your connection or account as the source, but that would only be a starting point—not proof that you personally carried out the activity. A single short connection with no indication of wrongdoing is very unlikely to lead to any consequences.
