I took my four-year-old HP gaming laptop with an RTX 4090 to a technician after receiving a fan error. The technician installed replacement fans, but they did not spin when he powered the laptop on. He still ran a stress test for roughly 30 seconds. The laptop either shut itself off or the test was stopped, and the fan assembly felt extremely hot when he opened it.
The machine appeared to reach the desktop afterward, but I did not test any applications or games. The technician suspects the replacement fans may have been defective, although the fan headers or installation could also be at fault. I'm taking it to another reputable shop for diagnostics, but I'm worried that running the laptop without functioning fans may have caused hidden damage or shortened its lifespan. How likely is that, and what should I have checked?

Heat coming from the exhaust does not necessarily prove the fans were working; it could simply be heat escaping naturally. The shop should verify that the replacements are the exact model, that they receive power, that the fan headers work, and that nothing is obstructing the heatsink or fan blades. BIOS hardware detection and a controlled diagnostic test should help identify the fault.
Modern CPUs and GPUs have thermal protection. They will reduce performance, throttle heavily, or shut the system down if temperatures become dangerous. A brief 30-second stress test is unlikely to create delayed damage or microscopic motherboard cracks by itself. The important issue is finding out why the fans were not spinning.
