They aren't mutually exclusive. A phone can use cellular for calls or data while also using Wi-Fi for local networking, and features such as Wi-Fi calling can use a broadband connection when cellular reception is weak. Wi-Fi can even cover long distances with directional equipment, but that is a specialized point-to-point setup rather than typical household Wi-Fi.
Older versions can absolutely become obsolete. Carriers eventually shut down outdated cellular networks, and devices that support only those standards stop working. Wi-Fi equipment can also age out, although privately owned routers are not dependent on one nationwide provider and may continue working with compatible local devices for a long time. Spectrum rules, infrastructure costs, battery life, coverage, and convenience will all influence what survives.
Wi-Fi and 5G are communication standards and protocols built on radio technology, not completely separate kinds of physics. Both will continue to evolve, and newer standards may eventually replace today's versions. However, future networks will still need solutions for short-range private connections, wide-area mobile coverage, and different bandwidth and power requirements. A future standard could combine some of these functions, but that does not guarantee one network will replace every use of the other.
