CPU Clock Speeds Drop While Gaming on a Dell G16 Under Linux

I have a Dell G16 7630 with an i9-13900HX and RTX 4060, and I've been trying to switch to Linux. Unfortunately, whenever I play a game, the CPU clock speed drops significantly and my FPS suffers. This happened first on Kubuntu and again after switching to CachyOS, so I'm wondering whether KDE Plasma or Linux power management is involved.

I've tried several fixes but haven't been able to resolve it. The laptop performs normally in Windows, and my firmware and system software are up to date. I may dual-boot because I rely on some Windows-only applications and games, but I'd like to know whether other Dell or gaming-laptop owners have found a reliable solution, or whether a different distribution such as PikaOS or Bazzite handles this hardware better.

I have a Dell G16 7620 and have had better results with PikaOS. It may be worth testing on your model, especially since it includes gaming-focused defaults that could help with power management and graphics configuration.

A CPU frequency drop during gaming can point to firmware, thermal, or CPU microcode behavior. Even if the operating system is current, it’s worth checking the laptop’s UEFI settings and confirming that the latest Dell firmware and microcode updates are installed. Also compare temperatures and power limits when the clock speed falls, since thermal or power throttling can look like a Linux performance problem.

Bazzite could also be worth testing. Its gaming-oriented setup may provide better defaults for graphics drivers, performance profiles, and controller or Steam integration than a general-purpose desktop installation. It won’t guarantee a fix, but it can help determine whether the problem is distribution configuration rather than the hardware itself.
