After rebooting my PC, my custom mouse cursor reset to the default appearance and I can't get it working again. I've tried selecting the cursor through both Control Panel and the Settings app; the custom scheme appears to be selected, but the normal pointer still displays incorrectly. Interestingly, the custom cursor appears when hovering over text boxes, while the regular selection pointer changes back. During startup, the custom cursor briefly loads before being replaced. How can I stop Windows from overriding it?

Try opening the classic mouse settings directly with `control main.cpl`. The available pointer options can depend on which mouse and pointer drivers are installed. Check for old or incorrect drivers—sometimes Windows installs a manufacturer driver you don’t actually need, such as an Alps driver. Remove drivers for hardware brands that aren’t present, then restart and reapply the cursor scheme.
Updating the mouse or touchpad drivers is worth checking, since a driver conflict can cause pointer schemes to behave differently depending on what’s under the cursor. Look in Device Manager for duplicate, outdated, or unfamiliar mouse and pointing-device drivers, and uninstall the ones that don’t match your hardware before rebooting.
