I'm troubleshooting wired 802.1X on a Dell laptop connected through a Dell WD19 or WD19S dock. The setup is laptop → dock → Ethernet → switch. When the laptop is connected directly to the switch, it authenticates successfully with 802.1X. Through the dock, however, the switch learns the laptop's real MAC address and the endpoint is identified correctly, but authentication falls back to MAC Authentication Bypass (MAB). It appears that the laptop's EAPOL frames are not reaching the switch. The laptop's 802.1X configuration seems fine because direct connections work. Could this be caused by dock firmware, the Realtek Ethernet driver, MAC pass-through, BIOS settings, or an EAPOL pass-through issue?

WD19 and WD19S docks can work with 802.1X, so the dock model itself doesn’t necessarily prevent it. In our environment, we use 802.1X without configuring MAB as a fallback, and the docks authenticate normally.
Start by running Dell Command Update while the laptop is physically connected to the dock. Update the dock firmware, Ethernet and other dock drivers, the laptop BIOS, and any bridge or related firmware. Keep the dock connected until all updates finish and the laptop has rebooted. Older dock firmware and network drivers have caused packet loss and authentication problems.
Also verify the Windows Wired AutoConfig service is enabled and that wired network settings still show 802.1X enabled. We’ve seen newly imaged machines where the service wasn’t enabled even though the policy configuration looked correct.
Check the laptop BIOS for the MAC pass-through setting as well. Since the switch is learning the laptop’s address, pass-through may already be working, but it’s still worth confirming the intended setting and checking whether the dock’s firmware supports it correctly.
