My Dell XPS 8950 was left on overnight while installing Arc Raiders through Steam. The next day, it displayed a "boot failure on device" message instead of starting Windows. I followed Dell's no-boot troubleshooting guide and tried restarting several times to trigger the Windows recovery environment, but it keeps returning to the same boot-failure screen rather than showing repair options. The built-in ePSA diagnostics report that the hardware passes. I'm currently using BIOS version 1.20.0, version ED.3.2.1. I don't remember Windows or driver updates being installed, and I'm not sure whether the game was installed on the correct drive. I'm also unfamiliar with terms like BCD, so beginner-friendly steps would be appreciated.

Passing ePSA is encouraging, but it doesn’t necessarily prove that Windows can find or boot from the system drive. In BIOS, check whether the Windows drive is detected and make sure Windows Boot Manager is first in the boot order. If the drive is missing, power down and check the drive connection; the SSD itself may be failing. If the drive is detected, the boot configuration may have been damaged. Installing a game to the C: drive normally does not break Windows by itself, although filling the drive completely can cause problems. You may need a Windows installation USB to open recovery tools and run Startup Repair. If that fails, the boot records can often be rebuilt with commands such as bcdboot, but avoid formatting or reinstalling until important files have been backed up.
I don’t remember any updates being installed, and I wasn’t aware that installing a game on the C: drive could be related. I’ll check the BIOS to see whether the drive and Windows Boot Manager are still listed before trying anything more advanced.
