My laptop screen used to gradually freeze and fade to black, especially when the machine got hot during games. Pressing certain parts of the display would sometimes bring it back temporarily. You may have jostled a loose display cable or connector back into place, so it is possible the screen temporarily started working again. However, hitting it can also damage the panel, hinges, motherboard, or cable further. I would expect the problem to return rather than consider this a permanent repair. Back up anything important and have the internal connections inspected.
Since heat made the symptoms worse, check the cooling system as well. Dust, a failing fan, or excessive temperatures could be contributing, even if the immediate problem is a loose cable. Avoid striking the laptop again, monitor the temperatures, and get it repaired before the temporary improvement turns into permanent damage.
