Did RAM Prices Actually Go Up?

I'm wondering if the RAM prices I saw are legit. I found some 16GB RAM (2x8 sticks) for 125 AUD at Big W here in Australia. I've heard RAM prices were going down recently, but with everything else, I'm not sure. Any thoughts?

I bought the same kind of RAM last September for around $31.38 each—totaled about $62.76. Now, they’re selling for $99 each! That’s a crazy increase, honestly.

Oh no, that was going to be part of my first build!

Just so you know, the RAM you're looking at is a 16GB DDR4 kit, which is pretty common these days. Just make sure you're getting a good deal considering the recent price hikes.

Good to know! I had a feeling it was DDR4, thanks for clarifying!

Yeah, it's definitely real. RAM prices have surged almost 400%! A lot of that has to do with the demand from AI companies; all those data centers need significant amounts of RAM, and that's taken priority in production. Because of that, the supply for regular consumers like us has sharply decreased, leaving more people competing for fewer products.

Totally get you! I hope this trend doesn't stick around for too long. It’s frustrating after the whole parts shortage from 2021.

By the way, I meant to say, "RAM prices went up" in the title. Just realized it was a bit misleading.

How does that even happen? Seems like the market is all over the place right now.
