Disabled Integrated GPU and Now Windows 11 Isn’t Working, What Can I Do?

I recently disabled my integrated GPU because I was having issues with a game, which kept using the integrated graphics instead of my Nvidia GPU, despite changing the settings. However, after I restarted my laptop, I encountered some serious issues with Windows 11. Now, all the app and file thumbnails on my Desktop and in File Explorer are invisible, the Taskbar icons are broken, the Control Panel is completely blank, and I can't even open Task Manager. What steps can I take to fix this?

Disabling the integrated GPU on laptops isn't usually a good idea, especially if done outside of the BIOS. It can cause issues since only the drivers are disabled, not the hardware itself, which might not provide any real performance benefits. It’s better to adjust your power settings or set specific applications to use the Nvidia GPU through Windows' graphics settings or the Nvidia Control Panel.

Just so you know, your laptop specs seem solid: Intel i5 12450h with an Nvidia RTX 3060 and 16GB of RAM should handle most games well. Have you checked if the issue persists after re-enabling the integrated GPU? Let us know, and we can try more troubleshooting steps!

In laptops, the discrete GPU actually works in tandem with the integrated GPU. Disabling one can inadvertently disable the other. I suggest you try booting into safe mode, uninstall both GPUs, and then reinstall them in normal mode. Your settings might also let you prioritize which GPU to use. If you're back into Windows, just re-enable the integrated GPU to see if that helps things.

Just a heads up, some high-end laptops do have a hardware mux chip that can let you use just the dedicated GPU, but that’s usually toggled in the BIOS or through specific laptop software. It’s not just a simple switch.
