I scheduled a battery replacement for my iPhone 13 mini, but the confirmation email says I need to be on the latest iOS version first. I'm currently using iOS 17 because I rely on a certain 'today style' widget that was taken out in iOS 18, so I'm hesitant to update if it's not necessary. Has anyone gone through a battery replacement and been able to stick with an older iOS version?

From my experience, yes, they usually require you to update. I was stuck on iOS 17 too, and unfortunately, they updated me to the latest version.
There's a good chance they'll ask you to update your iOS before replacing the battery. It's pretty standard practice now.
It seems like you might need to be on the latest iOS for them to do the battery replacement. They often have to run a System Configuration that requires the latest updates, especially for certain hardware connections. But for just the battery, it's not guaranteed.

That’s such a bummer! Now I’m torn between getting a new battery or losing my favorite widget.
