Do I Need a CPU Cooler if I Have Case Fans?

I'm trying to figure out if I need a separate CPU cooler even though my PC case has built-in case fans. If I do need a CPU cooler, where does it go? Do I take out the case cooler to install a CPU fan instead? I'm really ready to purchase my PC but I just can't decide on the right case and cooler.

Yes, you'll need both case fans and a CPU cooler. The CPU cooler goes directly on top of your CPU. Just to clarify, there's no such thing as a 'case cooler'; those are just case fans. If you opt for a liquid cooler, there will be fans included which could replace 2 or 3 standard case fans, so that’s something to consider.

Most cases come with plenty of fans already, and some people just add extra ones for aesthetics or hardcore cooling. However, you'll still need to buy a CPU cooler unless you pick a budget CPU that comes with one. A popular affordable choice is the Thermaltake Phantom Spirit.

You definitely need both. The CPU cooler does exactly what it sounds like—it keeps your CPU cool! The case fans help bring cool air in for the CPU cooler to work efficiently, while the exhaust fans push hot air out, so your PC doesn’t get too toasty. Ideally, you want more intake fans than exhaust. I have 6 intakes and 1 exhaust!
