I want to become a backend developer and I'm currently learning Python. I'm planning to use FastAPI for building web APIs, but I'm unsure whether I also need to learn JavaScript or Node.js. Should I add another backend stack, or should I focus on Python and other foundational skills first?

Python and FastAPI are a perfectly reasonable starting point. Try building complete projects instead of collecting languages—things like an API with a database, user authentication, background jobs, tests, and deployment. Later, you can rebuild one of those projects with Node.js or TypeScript to compare the approaches, but you don’t need to learn them immediately.

The language itself matters less than being able to design and maintain working systems. Learn Python well enough to understand programming concepts, then broaden your skills through projects. Also become comfortable using modern development tools, including AI assistants, while still reviewing and testing the code they produce.

There’s no guaranteed timeline for getting hired, so consistency and a solid portfolio matter more than choosing the perfect stack. Follow a backend roadmap, learn the core concepts, and create projects that demonstrate what you can actually build. JavaScript or TypeScript can be useful later, especially if you want broader web-development options, but it isn’t a requirement for starting with Python.
