Do I Need Steam to Run Pirated Games or Use Windows Apps on Linux?

Hey, I've always been someone who pirated games and never bothered with Steam, but now it seems like I might need it to get Proton. Currently, I'm trying to run a so-called 'native Linux game' from someone named j141, and I'm not sure if it will work without Proton. I think I just need to use `chmod +x` to play it, but I haven't even checked the file yet. I definitely need Proton for any games that aren't native to Linux.

Also, I heard you can use Proton for some Windows apps, but I'm unsure if that's feasible. Is there a way to install Proton separately, or do I really need Steam for that? By the way, I'm on Arch Linux.

You definitely don't need Steam just to run Proton. You can use Bottles for that, which allows you to get the Proton command line without the whole Steam setup.

Cool, I’ll check it out! But I've also seen recommendations for Lutris, what’s the difference between that and Bottles?
