Do I Need to Reinstall Windows After Replacing My Motherboard with the Same Model?

My ASUS TUF B450-Pro Gaming motherboard is showing a "USB overcurrent status detected" error and won't boot past it. I've checked the ports, disconnected all external USB devices and internal USB headers, and even tested the motherboard outside the case, but the problem remains. I've been offered a replacement motherboard of the exact same model. Would I need to reinstall Windows after swapping it?

No, Windows should normally boot without a reinstall when replacing the board with the same model. Youโ€™ll probably need to review your BIOS settings afterward, since they may reset to their defaults. Itโ€™s also possible that Windows could ask you to reactivate, depending on how your license is tied to the hardware.

LunarPebble6: That makes sense. I was mainly worried about having to start over, so itโ€™s good to know the existing installation should usually remain usable.

Before replacing the board, itโ€™s worth checking every USB connection again, including front-panel headers, internal USB cables, and anything connected directly to the board. However, if youโ€™ve already tested with all of those disconnected and the overcurrent error still prevents booting, accepting the no-cost replacement is reasonable. You shouldnโ€™t need to reinstall Windows afterward, though you may need to recheck BIOS settings and install a few motherboard drivers.

MellowPine47: I already tried disconnecting the USB devices and headers, checking the ports, and testing the board outside the case. Since the error keeps returning and the replacement is free, Iโ€™d rather swap it than risk dealing with the same fault again.

A same-model motherboard swap shouldnโ€™t require reinstalling Windows. The replacement may have different hardware identifiers, so Windows activation could be triggered even though the model is identical. If that happens, activation can usually be restored through your existing license or linked account.

MellowPine47: Got it, thanks. Iโ€™ll make sure Iโ€™m prepared to reactivate it if Windows detects the replacement as a hardware change.
