I froze my credit files with all three major credit reporting agencies after a data breach and have kept them locked. I'm planning to preorder an iPhone through Klarna or Apple's Upgrade Program, but I'm unclear whether the application requires access to my credit reports. I assumed it might only involve a soft inquiry, so the freeze wouldn't matter, but I've found conflicting information. Has anyone successfully preordered through Apple's Upgrade Program while their credit was frozen?

You’ll probably need to temporarily lift the freezes. Even if the inquiry is described as a soft pull, the financing or lease application still needs to access your credit file, and an active freeze can prevent the application from being approved.
A credit freeze is designed to stop new lenders from opening accounts, so it generally has to be lifted before applying for a phone installment plan or lease. Check which agency the provider uses and whether they offer a specific temporary lift or PIN process, then restore the freeze after the application is complete.

That makes sense. I was thinking of it like Apple Card financing, but the Upgrade Program is still a separate financing or lease application, so it may need access to my reports.
