Do I need to wipe my drive when replacing my motherboard?

I'm planning to upgrade my motherboard so I can use faster RAM and a newer CPU. I could either create a Windows installation USB, erase my M.2 drive, and perform a clean installation, or leave the drive untouched and boot Windows after installing the new motherboard. Some people say the old drivers could cause problems, while others say Windows will handle the hardware change. I mainly use this PC for gaming, and my important files and game saves are backed up. I've never replaced a motherboard before, so I'd prefer the option that avoids difficult troubleshooting.

You can usually swap the motherboard without wiping Windows. Modern versions of Windows are much better at adapting to new hardware, and many people do this successfully. Afterward, install the latest chipset, network, audio, and other drivers from the motherboard manufacturer’s website. Make sure your Windows license is linked to your account or otherwise ready to reactivate after the hardware change.

A clean install is usually the safest option after a major hardware change because it removes old drivers and years of accumulated software clutter. You don’t absolutely have to wipe the drive, but since you don’t have important local files to preserve, starting fresh may be the least complicated route.

I’m leaning toward a clean install since it would also clear out years of programs and other clutter. I’m still not totally sure how to prepare the installation USB and wipe the drive, though.

If you choose the clean-install route, download a Windows ISO, use a tool such as Rufus to make a bootable USB drive, boot the new system from that USB, and choose the custom installation option. Delete the existing Windows partitions on the M.2 only after confirming your backups are safe, then install Windows to the unallocated space.
