Do Linux distributions install security updates automatically?

Windows enables automatic updates by default, which is useful for protecting against security vulnerabilities even though the process can sometimes be disruptive. Do most popular Linux distributions behave similarly? If automatic security updates are not enabled by default, how can I configure them? I'm mainly interested in vulnerability and security fixes, not regular feature upgrades.

Many people prefer the notification-first approach because updates can occasionally require a service restart or reboot. Desktop tools such as KDEโs update notifier can alert you about updates from package repositories and Flatpak, while leaving the decision to install them up to you. Kernel and driver updates normally tell you when a reboot is needed but should not restart the computer on their own.

Some long-term-support releases are a good fit if you mainly want security and bug fixes instead of frequent feature changes. You can generally configure the system to install security updates automatically while keeping larger upgrades manual. Check the distributionโs update manager for an option named something like unattended, automatic, or security updates.

Most Linux distributions aimed at general desktop users have update checking enabled by default, but the usual behavior is to notify you rather than install everything without asking. Youโll often see a tray icon or notification when updates are available, and you can install them when convenient. The exact defaults vary by distribution and version.

There isnโt one universal Linux setting for this. On Debian-based systems, for example, you can install and configure the unattended-upgrades package to apply security fixes automatically. Other distributions provide their own graphical settings or background-update services, so the precise instructions depend on which distribution and release youโre using.
