Docker Desktop Stuck on “Starting the Docker Engine” in Windows

I installed Docker Desktop on Windows and followed the official setup steps, including enabling virtualization, WSL, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux. However, Docker Desktop remains stuck on "Starting the Docker Engine." I also tried unregistering both the docker-desktop and docker-desktop-data WSL distributions, but that did not help. I have tested WSL with Ubuntu and without a distro installed. What else should I check or try?

If the Windows setup continues to fight you, running Docker on a native Linux installation or a dedicated Linux virtual machine is usually simpler and more reliable. Docker works on Windows through WSL 2, but virtualization, feature versions, and Desktop integration can create extra failure points.

First update WSL, shut it down completely, and verify that Hyper-V and Virtual Machine Platform are enabled. From an elevated PowerShell window, run `wsl --update` and `wsl --shutdown`, then check or enable the two optional Windows features. Restart Windows afterward and try Docker Desktop again.

Check version compatibility between Windows, WSL, and Docker Desktop, then remove and reinstall Docker Desktop after updating WSL. Also confirm virtualization is enabled in firmware and that no other virtualization software or security setting is interfering with the WSL 2 virtual machine.

Make sure Docker Desktop is installed and actually running before trying to use Docker from a WSL terminal. If Docker Desktop still hangs, try launching it as administrator and check that its WSL 2 backend is selected. A mismatch between the WSL version and Docker Desktop installation can also require reinstalling Docker after WSL is updated.

Docker Desktop is not strictly required if Docker Engine is installed directly inside a WSL 2 distribution, but the two setups should not be mixed accidentally. Pick either the Desktop-managed WSL integration or a direct Linux installation and configure that setup consistently.
