Does a Sound Card Really Enhance Audio Quality for High-End PCs?

I'm considering upgrading my high-end PC audio setup, which includes a CPU: 9950X3D, GPU: RTX Pro 6000 and RTX 5090, and RAM: Acer Predator 6000 CL26 192GB. My motherboard is an X870E Aorus Master X3D Ice. I've read about the Sound Blaster AE-9 sound card and the X5, but I'm curiousโwill adding a decent sound card make a noticeable improvement in audio quality for my Sennheiser IE 900 earphones and Edifier A300 Pro speakers? Also, since my second graphics card blocks the third PCIe slot, I'd have to use a USB to PCIe adapter for installation. Is it worth the effort?

Yes, a good sound card can improve your audio quality, but donโt go for an internal one. Theyโre not worth it anymore, especially when you have options like USB DACs that are more effective and less hassle to set up.

Iโve got to second the external USB DAC suggestion. Iโve got a simple FiiO EK10 that sounds amazing for the price. If you're not an audiophile, something like this could be perfect for your needs without breaking the bank.

My experience is that dedicated sound cards are still useful in specific cases, but for most users, modern onboard audio chips handle things well enough. If you want better sound for high-end gear, just invest in a reputable external DAC. It makes a big difference!

Honestly, internal sound cards are becoming obsolete. For your setup, I'd recommend an external USB DAC and amp instead. They separate audio signals from interference caused by the PSU and GPU, improving sound quality significantly. Trust me, it'll be a better move than installing any internal sound card.

An external audio interface might be your best bet, especially if youโre aiming to produce music or record. External components just offer more versatility and tend to sound greatโplus, theyโre easier to upgrade.
