I saw someone claim that laptop battery life and battery-cycle longevity are generally better on Windows than on Linux. That seems counterintuitive, so how does it actually compare in practice? Are there particular hardware or software factors that make one perform better than the other?

The specific laptop and Linux distribution matter a lot. Linux can be very efficient, especially with a lightweight desktop and fewer background services, but missing or less-polished drivers can offset that advantage. Hybrid-graphics laptops are often the difficult case. If the dedicated GPU doesn’t fully power down, battery life can be much worse on Linux. Systems using only integrated graphics are more likely to achieve battery life close to Windows, though even that depends on firmware, drivers, and kernel support.

It can be true, but there isn’t a universal rule. Windows usually gets more manufacturer testing, so drivers and power-management features may be better tuned for a particular laptop. On the same machine, Linux might therefore use more power—or it might perform just as well if its hardware support is good.
