Does My Older PC Case Need an Airflow Upgrade?

I'm considering replacing my NZXT Source 530 with a newer case, mainly to improve cooling rather than appearance. The Source 530 is spacious and has a mesh front, but I'm not sure whether its age or internal volume makes it less effective than newer airflow-focused cases.

My current setup uses three Thermalright 120 mm fans: one front intake and two top exhausts, plus the CPU cooler's rear exhaust. The graphics card is an Intel Arc B580 with three fans, and the rest of the system includes a Ryzen 7 5700X, a 750 W Gold-rated power supply, and 32 GB of RAM. I've removed the drive cages, leaving room for additional front fans, a rear fan, and bottom-mounted fans.

I'm considering newer options such as the NZXT H5 Flow or a similar mesh-front case. How should I optimize fan placement and direction in my current case, and is there any meaningful cooling advantage to replacing it? Does a larger, roomier case improve airflow, or can a smaller case with a more focused layout work just as well?

The best way to decide is to measure temperatures under a consistent workload. Run a benchmark with the case closed, record CPU and GPU temperatures and fan noise, then repeat with both side panels removed. If the open-case result is only a few degrees cooler, the case airflow is already adequate. A large difference suggests experimenting with fan positions or adding intake capacity. The main goal is to move cool air across the components and get the heat rising from the CPU and GPU out of the case quickly.

Fan placement matters more than having a huge amount of empty space. Since the drive cages are already gone, the front intake has a clear path toward the GPU. You could add another front intake if needed, but don’t assume every available fan mount must be filled.

With one front intake and two top exhausts, the frontmost top fan may be exhausting some fresh air before it reaches the CPU or GPU. Try moving that fan to the rear exhaust position and leave only the rear section of the top panel as exhaust. That usually creates a more direct front-to-back airflow path. Keep the front intake aimed roughly at the GPU level; adding a bottom intake can help, but it may also bring in more dust and noise, so test temperatures before adding one.

I’m going to move the front top exhaust to the rear and compare the temperatures. The front intake is currently aligned with the GPU, and the drive cages are already removed, so I’ll test that arrangement before adding more fans.

Your Source 530 is not automatically obsolete. It has a mesh front, plenty of room, and a fairly flexible fan layout. Whether it is sufficient depends more on the power draw of your components and your actual temperatures than on the case’s age. A Ryzen 7 5700X and Arc B580 are not especially difficult to cool with a reasonable airflow setup, so replacing the case is probably optional rather than necessary.

A newer case could still be worthwhile for quieter operation, easier cable management, a front USB-C port, or simply because you prefer its design. But if your temperatures and noise levels are acceptable, there is no urgent cooling reason to replace a case that is working well.

That helps a lot. I built this newer system in the older case, so I was mainly worried that modern hardware needed a completely different design. Since the components are not especially hot-running and the case seems to be doing fine, I’ll probably keep it unless testing shows a real problem.
