Ethernet Says No Internet While Wi‑Fi Works—What Should I Check?

My PC connects to the internet normally over Wi‑Fi, but the wired Ethernet connection will not work. I've already tried replacing the cable and checking various network and device settings. I also reset the TCP/IP and DNS settings from an elevated Command Prompt and updated the Ethernet drivers, but neither helped. What other troubleshooting steps should I try?

Open Command Prompt and run ipconfig. Check whether the Ethernet adapter receives an IPv4 address and default gateway. If it has an address such as 169.254.x.x or no gateway, the router is not assigning it an address. If it has a normal address, try pinging the router’s gateway to separate a local connection problem from an internet or DNS problem.

It’s also worth confirming whether this wired connection ever worked before. Check the router’s DHCP client list and test another device using the same Ethernet port and cable. If other wired devices work, uninstalling and reinstalling the Ethernet adapter in Device Manager or checking the motherboard manufacturer’s driver may help; if nothing gets a link, the Ethernet port or router port could be faulty.

First check whether the Ethernet port shows a link light when the cable is connected. If there’s no light, test another router port and cable, then check whether the adapter is enabled in Device Manager. No link usually points to a cable, port, or hardware issue rather than DNS or Windows settings.
