My current PC recently died, and I'm planning my first new build in more than ten years. I mainly use a MacBook Pro for productivity, so this desktop will mostly be for gaming and general-purpose use.
My current parts list is:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
- Motherboard: Asus X870 MAX GAMING WIFI7 AM5 ATX
- Memory: 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5-6000 CL36, using two 16GB modules
- GPU: ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC
- Storage: Samsung 990 Pro 1TB NVMe SSD
- Power supply: NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W modular
- Case: Corsair Frame 5000D RS ARGB
- Cooler: DeepCool Spartacus 360 AIO with display
The total cost is getting higher than I expected, so I'd like to save money without sacrificing noticeable gaming performance. Would an 850W power supply be sufficient for this system, or is the 1000W model worth keeping for future upgrades and transient power spikes? I'm also wondering whether a 360mm AIO is necessary, or if a less expensive liquid cooler or air cooler would make more sense.
I'm unsure whether the case and Samsung 990 Pro offer enough practical value for their prices. I'd appreciate recommendations for cheaper cases and NVMe SSDs with similar real-world gaming performance.
I'm also considering changing the CPU and motherboard combination. The current combination costs roughly $412 and $363 in my local currency conversion. Alternatives are a Ryzen 7 9700X with an MSI PRO B850-S WIFI6E for about $230 and $218, or a Ryzen 9 9900X with an ASUS TUF GAMING B850-E WIFI for about $350 and $300. Which combination would make the most sense for gaming value?

The 360mm AIO is probably unnecessary unless you specifically want the appearance or display. A capable dual-tower air cooler, such as a Phantom Spirit-class cooler, should handle the processor for far less money and with fewer possible failure points. If you prefer liquid cooling, nearly any reputable 360mm AIO will perform similarly in gaming, so paying extra for a particular brand or screen usually isn’t worthwhile.
For gaming, the Samsung 990 Pro is difficult to justify at $265 for only 1TB. Game loading times usually won’t be noticeably different from a cheaper quality NVMe drive. Look for a 1TB or 2TB TLC SSD from brands such as WD, Solidigm, Crucial, Kingston, Lexar, or TeamGroup, depending on what is available locally. Prioritize a model with good reviews, a reasonable warranty, and ideally a proper cache rather than chasing the highest advertised sequential speed.
The motherboard appears expensive unless you specifically need its extra connectivity, expansion slots, or Wi-Fi features. A quality B850 board should provide everything needed for a gaming build, and even a discounted previous-generation board could be fine if it supports the features you want. Also compare memory prices across brands; Corsair kits are good, but they often cost more without offering better gaming performance than equivalent DDR5-6000 kits.
The case is mostly a matter of layout, airflow, noise, and personal taste. The Frame 5000D is convenient to build in and has good space for cable management, but it won’t make the computer faster. If you like its design and the local price is competitive, it’s a reasonable choice. Otherwise, a less expensive airflow-focused mid-tower can free up money for a larger SSD or a better monitor, which will usually be more noticeable in everyday use.
An 850W ATX 3.1 power supply should be plenty for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RTX 5070 Ti. A good 1000W unit gives you more upgrade room, but it isn’t required for this hardware. If the price difference is only around $40, keeping the 1000W model is reasonable, but it won’t improve current gaming performance.
The 9800X3D is the strongest gaming-focused option of the three CPUs. The 9700X is a much better value if you’re trying to reduce the total cost, especially at the prices you listed. The 9900X makes more sense for productivity or heavily multithreaded workloads than for a gaming-only system.

That helps clarify the CPU choice. Since I’ll mainly be gaming, I’m leaning toward comparing the 9700X savings against the 9800X3D before deciding.
