First PC Build: Are These Parts Compatible and Well Balanced?

I'm building my first PC in the US and would appreciate a second opinion before buying anything. My budget is about $1,500–$1,600 for the computer itself, or $1,600–$2,200 including a monitor. The current parts list includes an AM4 processor, a Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB graphics card, RAM, an NVMe SSD, a CPU cooler, a motherboard, a case, and a power supply. I'll also need Wi-Fi, either built into the motherboard or through an add-in card.

I plan to purchase the components over the next few months instead of all at once. I was considering buying the RAM and storage first because I've heard those prices may be unpredictable, but I'm concerned about missing return windows if something turns out to be defective.

Does the build look compatible and reasonably balanced? Are any parts unnecessarily expensive, underpowered, or mismatched? Would you swap anything for a better-value alternative, and are there any assembly problems or first-build mistakes that aren't obvious from typical guides?

The graphics card listing needs to be checked carefully. If it really is an RX 9060 XT 16GB, that makes much more sense than an RX 6600 at the listed price. A 1TB SSD priced around $260 also seems poor value; less expensive PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives should perform essentially the same for normal gaming and everyday use. I’d also spend a little more on a reputable 750W Gold-rated power supply for better efficiency and longevity.

I would strongly recommend buying the parts close together rather than spreading the purchases across several months. If a motherboard, RAM kit, or storage drive is defective, you may discover the problem after the store’s return period has ended. Prices can change, but that risk is usually less frustrating than being stuck with an untested part.

Thanks! The GPU is definitely supposed to be the XFX Swift OC Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB, so I’m not sure why the list displayed it differently.

Double-check the processor choice. A Core i5-14600KF with a compatible B760 DDR4 motherboard can offer considerably more performance for similar money, although moving to a newer platform with DDR5 may make more sense if the total bundle price is good. Since the current list appears to use an AM4 processor, don’t accidentally pair it with an AM5 or newer-generation motherboard.

For cooling, a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE is usually a much better value than a premium cooler and should be more than adequate for a processor below roughly 200W. A larger tower cooler is worthwhile if the price difference is small, but you don’t need to spend flagship-cooler money.

The monitor may be taking too much of the budget unless you specifically want an OLED. A good 1440p IPS display can free up several hundred dollars for the motherboard, power supply, or graphics card. On the other hand, 1440p high-refresh OLED monitors have become much cheaper, so don’t assume every 144Hz IPS model is automatically the best value—compare current prices before buying.

For the motherboard, look for a model with built-in Wi-Fi and preferably a 2.5Gb Ethernet port. That may be cleaner and better value than adding a separate Wi-Fi card. Also make sure the board uses the same socket and memory type as the processor in the list.

I’d avoid paying extra for an outdated case design with mediocre airflow. A modern mesh-front case is generally a better fit for a gaming build without optical or multiple hard drives.

The usual assembly problems are simple things: forgetting the motherboard standoffs, installing the CPU cooler before connecting the fan cable, leaving the motherboard power connector partially seated, putting the RAM in the wrong slots, or forgetting to remove the protective film from the cooler. Install the CPU, cooler, RAM, and M.2 drive on the motherboard before putting it in the case when possible. Test the system outside the case if you want to confirm that it posts before doing cable management, and check the motherboard manual for the correct RAM slots and front-panel connections.
