Gaming laptop overheating and crashing with “Driver IRQL Not Less or Equal” BSOD

My Acer Nitro 5 has recently started shutting down unexpectedly and sometimes shows a "Driver IRQL Not Less or Equal" blue-screen error. I initially suspected outdated or faulty drivers, but the laptop is also reaching around 90°C while gaming, and its CPU or GPU readings sometimes show values near 4000. It used to run games without problems, so I'm wondering whether dust buildup, failing fans, or old thermal paste could be causing the instability. As someone who hasn't worked inside a laptop before, what should I safely check and do first? Could overheating be related to this particular BSOD, and what other information would help diagnose it?

Around 90°C under gaming load is hot but not automatically abnormal for a gaming laptop; many laptops reduce performance or shut down if they reach their thermal limit. Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures separately, along with fan speeds and clock speeds. The “4000” figure is probably a frequency reading rather than a temperature. Update the BIOS and device drivers from Acer, but don’t assume heat is the only cause of an IRQL error.

Start by checking the crash dumps in C:WindowsMinidump. Those files can identify whether a particular driver caused the blue screen. Copy the folder somewhere safe and compress it, or configure Windows to create small memory dumps if none are being generated. The exact driver name from the dump is much more useful than the general BSOD message.

Power the laptop off, unplug it, and clean the vents and fans with compressed air while preventing the fans from spinning freely. If it’s still overheating, the internal heatsink may need cleaning and fresh thermal paste or thermal pads. Since opening a laptop is easy to get wrong, check the service manual or have a repair shop do it if you’re not comfortable. Also test it with the bottom elevated and avoid using it on fabric or a bed.
