GPU Clock Speed and Usage Fluctuate After Laptop Hardware Replacement

I have an Alienware x16 R2 with an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H and an NVIDIA RTX 4070. After a Dell technician replaced the CPU, GPU, and battery, my gaming performance changed noticeably. While playing Halo Campaign Evolved, the GPU clock repeatedly jumps between roughly 400 MHz and 1300 MHz, while GPU usage alternates between about 20% and 98% every second. The temperature remains around 88–89°C.

The desktop works normally, and this behavior only appears during games. My frame rate fluctuates between about 21 and 40 FPS, with a brief freeze happening roughly every second. NVIDIA Control Panel is set to use the NVIDIA processor globally. I previously had a problem where games switched to integrated graphics, which caused major FPS drops, so I'm wondering whether that might be happening again.

After the repair, the system also required several firmware updates. Could something have been installed or connected incorrectly during the repair? Should I reinstall the graphics drivers, check power or thermal settings, or verify anything else before contacting the technician again?

The unstable frame rate and regular freezing are more concerning than the usage percentage itself. Start by checking which GPU the game is actually using in Windows Graphics settings and in the NVIDIA overlay. Also confirm that the laptop is plugged into its proper charger and set to a high-performance or performance mode. If the system is accidentally using integrated graphics, or if it is power-limited, the clock speed can keep dropping and recovering like this.

Since the problem started immediately after the CPU and GPU replacement, I’d reinstall the NVIDIA driver using a clean installation, then install the laptop’s chipset and graphics drivers from Dell’s support page. Firmware updates can also reset performance profiles or graphics-switching settings. If the issue continues after that, the replacement GPU, heatsink contact, fan connection, or power connector should be inspected by the repair service.

Temperatures near 89°C may cause the laptop to reduce GPU clocks, especially if the GPU hotspot or CPU temperature is even higher. Check temperatures, power limits, and throttling reasons with a monitoring tool rather than relying only on the basic overlay. If the GPU repeatedly hits a thermal or power limit, the heatsink may not be seated correctly after the repair. Since the behavior began right afterward, I’d document the clock speeds, temperatures, FPS drops, and freezes and have Dell recheck the repair if driver cleanup doesn’t help.
